Natural water retention

‘Possibilities of storing, stores of possibilities’ is a concept of natural water retention by using the natural sponge capacity of undrained soils. The concept has been developed by Stroming and several partners such as WWF. We try to further develop and research this concept and promote it in the international Rhine region and possibly other basins. At the moment we are working on an international research proposal together with partners in Germany.

Together with Carthago Consultancy and Stroming I wrote an article about the concept:  Possibilities for storing? Stores of possibilities.

Temporary Nature in Nijmegen

For a future business park in the municipality of Nijmegen I applied for permission of temporary nature, an exemption from the wildlife law especially designed for areas temporarily not in urban use. Land owners often prevent nature development on their land, as they fear problems in the future with the wildlife law. The idea behind temporary nature is that it allows land owners to remove all  newly  arrived protected species once they start building, if they give way to nature development until that time.

UNECE-Workshops ‘Water and adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins.

In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 I participated in the team which organized the UNECE-Workshops on ‘Water and adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins’. In 2014 I also facilitated the workshop. These workshops are part of the work programme of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). In the past few years we have managed to transform these workshops into interactive and lively events, despite the language and cultural challenges that we faced.

Temporary Nature in the Province of Zuid-Holland

The idea of temporary nature is to stimulate nature development in areas that are temporarily not in (urban) use. Temporary nature offers an opportunity for both biodiversity and risk management as it reduces the risk of conflicts with the birds and habitats directives. Together with Stroming I provided the Province of Zuid-Holland with advice how to make best use of the instrument of temporary nature.

Redesigning the Ingensche Waarden in the flood plains of the Neder-Rijn

Together with Stroming I set up a plan to redesign the Ingensche Waarden from a silt deposit site to a natural and recreational area in the flood plains of the Neder-Rijn. Many share and stake holders are involved in this process.

Role Playing in the Training Consulting Skills

I participated several times in a role playing game which is part of the training Consulting Skills with De Associatie. By doing this I try to provide the students with useful feedback on their consulting techniques.

Meeting of the global network of basins working on adaptation to climate change

These small interactive meetings were aimed at sharing experiences between participants of the ‘global network of basins working on adaptation to climate change’ including the UNECE pilot projects. From 2011 to 2014 I was part of the UNECE team that organized these events  including the design of the workshop. In 2013 and 2014 I also facilitated the meetings and designed special exercises for them.

Recreational Lake in Itteren

Together with Stroming I set up a design to create a recreational lake by mining gravel in the Meuse basin near Maastricht in the Netherlands. Many share and stake holders were involved in this process.

Study tour on water and climate change adaptation for the Mekong River Commission

In cooperation with the ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit’ (GIZ) and UNECE I have organized and a European study tour on Climate Change Adaptation and water management. Participants included a group of high level country representatives from the Climate Change and Adaptation Initiative of the Mekong River Commission (MRC-CCAI).

An overview of the sites, meetings and presentations that were included in this trip, can be found at the UNECE webplatform.

Several activities for the UNECE Water Convention

From 2011-2013 I have have been supporting the Secretariat of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland with its water and climate change activities program and overall communication issues.

For the IUCN Water publication on Transboundary Water Governance I wrote a chapter on the UNECE pilot water and climate change projects.
