The moving story from one of my voters

This past Thursday I was installed as board member of the regional water authority ‘Hoogheemraadschap De Stichtse Rijnlanden. Every board member for a public pody in the Netherlands is obliged make an integrity promise.

I asked the chair of the installation meeting  for permission to share a short story about one of my voters, to underline my promises. This is what I said:

A man, 44 years old. Fled from his own country and now living in the Netherlands.

It was the first time in his life that we was allowed to vote. For our regional water authority elections.

He was very committed to go voting, because, as he said: where I come from, you get a gun pointed at your head if you ask for elections.

He voted for me. I was moved and felt honoured.

The responsibility to be an honest board member that I feel towards a voter like him is more significant than whichever vow or promise.
